Map of Inverness

There are an abundance of potential day trips that will showcase the Scottish scenery at its finest. One such tour from Inverness by car would be a tour of The Great Glen. The Great Glen is a long, straight fissure along a geological fault, running from Inverness in the North East to Fort William in the South West. Driving from Inverness to Spean Bridge, along the banks of Loch Ness and through towns and villages such as Drumnadrochit, Invermoriston, Fort George and Fort Augustus, you will be treated to spectacular views of the surrounding mountains rising majestically from the water. Return via Dalwhinnie after following the A86 that runs by the equally picturesque loch Laggan. Perhaps the non-drivers will be tempted to sample a wee dram at the distillery. The A9 back to Inverness passes towns such as Kingussie and Aviemore and takes in the breathtaking views of The Cairngorms. The road here is one of the highest points where you can drive in the UK, perhaps second only to nearby Glenshee. As you would expect, the wild vistas of the Scottish highlands can be enjoyed from an excellent vantage point.

Inverness is truly "the city in the Highlands" - a well-resourced small city and an ideal touring centre with plenty to see and do all around by way of sport and leisure activities:

  • Kingussie
  • Carrbridge
  • Grantown-on-Spey
  • Culloden and Cawdor
  • Nairn
  • Fort George
  • Dingwall and Around
  • The Tain Peninsula
  • North of Bonar Bridge
  • Dornoch
